Facilitating Discovery

"Discovery"

This word conjures up my mind ancient maps, compasses, sailing ships, dug out canoes gliding down a river, pith helmets, and Indiana Jones. I love discovery. It's no wonder that I love living cross-culturally. Everyday there are new mysteries to solves, discoveries to be made.

Discoveries, insights both large and small, are a fundamental part of the coaching experience. Jesus spoke of having "eyes to see, and ears to hear." People make discoveries about themselves: their situation, their potential, their actions, their inaction, their assumptions, their values, and the list goes on and on.

Coaches facilitate these discoveries and help people take action based on their insights. "Though good advice lies deep within a person's heart, the wise will draw it out," says Proverbs 20:5. The thrill of discovery produces new thoughts, emotions, perspectives, and determination. It is essential to capture these products of discovery and further apply them to other areas of life.

The Holy Spirit is the best source for insights, ideas, and discoveries. Coaches help people to hear the Holy Spirit more clearly and then support them to respond well. "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." John 14:26
